EEG’s movement for a clean and green environment has come a long way. From 1991 to now, we have reached out to different sectors, groups and communities. We have set up networks successfully with government bodies, companies, schools, colleges, universities, and with the public. We have introduced environmental concepts and themes, built awareness, increased public will and capacity to be environmentally active, and have tried to institute new and innovative solutions to tackle environmental issues like waste, energy, water, etc. EEG has been engaged in building a strong platform for environmental responsibility among different stakeholders. Targeting children and youth to create early awareness about the environment, EEG’s educational programmes provide wonderful avenues for expressing concerns and showcasing talents. A range of very successful programmes including workshops and competitions make the EEG a known name in the field of environmental education and awareness building through informal, non-curricular media. Our campaign on waste reduction and management is long standing and dynamic. Ever evolving, today we have the satisfaction of being able to initiate six different waste segregation and collection schemes across the communities. Through these we target common waste streams, - paper, cans, plastic, glass, toners and batteries. It is our dream to expand this campaign on a truly national level and contribute towards reducing the enormous burden of waste on our country. Three years ago we launched a unique forum to promote corporate citizenship and environmental stewardship among businesses. Today the EEG Corporate Social Responsibility Network is a strong platform which provides companies across the GCC the knowledge, resources and opportunities to implement social, environmental and governance principles in their business. The Network has successfully linked up with local and international CSR initiatives including the United Nations Global Compact, the world wide voluntary CSR initiative led by the UN Secretary General and participated in by over 5000 organisations across 150 countries. Our community lectures and publications continue to create awareness, as well as inspire and motivate action. Our monthly newsletters and the flagship Wastepaper magazine are widely seen as effective knowledge tools. Our posters, brochures, flyers, booklets, media campaigns are creatively designed to appeal to all sections of the society and are much in demand. We supplement our efforts to bridge the gap in knowledge and expertise through presentations and talks to various target groups, and through our contribution in seminars, conferences, workshops and exhibitions. Our recent project The Million Tree Campaign, a strong example of our mission, - “thinking globally, acting locally”, is an extension of the UNEP initiated Billion Tree Campaign launched in 2007. It has succeeded in matching and exceeding the initial target, - thanks to the overwhelming response of the government, private sector and communities in the UAE. It continues to reach out to our stakeholders, in a bid to promote greening initiatives across the country; in honour of the legacy left behind by the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, - father of the nation and founder president of the UAE, and his vision of a green oasis called the UAE in the midst of the Arabian desert. We have achieved great success in our mission, but a lot is left to be accomplished. We are grateful for the commitment and support of our government, businesses and communities. We are eager to be a part of the UAE’s progression towards a sustainable and green future. We hope to have everyone with us in this journey. Habiba Al Marashi Together for a Better Environment
